Native Hawaiian Sovereignty. HR 2314 (Roll Call 58)
The House adopted an
amendment that would have formally recognized Native Hawaiians as an indigenous
group similar to an Indian tribe without meeting the legal definition of a tribe.
Requirements waived include the tribe already existing, members residing geographically
together, having governing documents and showing evidence of membership from
historical times. ACU opposed the amendment but it was adopted February 23, 2010, by
a vote of 245-164.
