Social Security/Railroad Retirement One-time Payment. HR 5987 (Roll Call 611)
The House defeated a bill giving all Social Security and Railroad Retirement recipients a
one-time payment of $250 regardless of income because they did not get a cost-of-living
increase this year, adding $14 billion to the deficit. ACU opposed this gratuity. Although
a 254-153 majority of the House voted for it December 8, 2010, under the procedures
used, a two-thirds majority was required, so the bill was defeated.
