Vote Description

S 178 (Roll Call 159) Religious Freedom

The Leahy amendment to the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act prevents the federal government from participating in programs designed to fight human trafficking if the program discriminates, regardless of religious belief, on the basis of sexual orientation or “gender identity.” America has a long tradition of helping people through faith-based charities, which this bill flies in the face of. ACU supports the right to practice the free exercise of religion and believes no one should be excluded from federal programs for practicing religion and opposed this amendment. The Senate voted in favor of the amendment on April 22, 2015 by a vote of 56-43, but it required 60 votes for passage
